Full-rules chess with castling, en passant, promotion and every draw rule. Play Quokka Bot from Rookie to Master, or pass the device to a friend. Includes drag-or-tap moves, legal-move dots, move list, captured pieces, optional clocks, undo, board flip and auto-saved games.

How to play

Choose vs Computer (levels 1–5) or 2 Players, pick your color and an optional clock (none, 10 min, or 5|3). Drag a piece or tap it and then tap a highlighted square. Checkmate the enemy king to win; stalemate, threefold repetition, the 50-move rule and insufficient material are draws. Pawns reaching the last rank let you choose a queen, rook, bishop or knight.

Controls

Drag or tap pieces to move. Keyboard: arrow keys to move between squares, Enter or Space to pick up and drop, U to undo, F to flip the board, Esc to cancel.

Tips and strategy

  • Against Quokka Bot, pressing U takes back both your last move and the bot's reply, so you can test a different idea.
  • Rookie and Casual levels sometimes blunder on purpose, so look for loose pieces; from Club up, the bot never blunders deliberately.
  • In 5|3 games you gain 3 seconds after each move, so quick replies in simple positions build a time cushion.
  • Press F to flip the board when playing as Black or when passing the device in 2 Players mode.

Chess FAQ

What happens if my clock runs out in Chess?

You lose on time, unless your opponent does not have enough material to checkmate, in which case the game is a draw. Undo is not available after a time loss.

What difficulty levels does Quokka Bot have?

There are five: Rookie, Casual, Club, Expert and Master. Higher levels search deeper and think longer, and Master plays without any added randomness.

Does the Chess clock keep running if I switch tabs?

No. The clock pauses while the tab is hidden or the menu is open.

Does Chess save my game?

Yes. Games are saved automatically in this browser, and an unfinished game can be resumed from the menu.

The game runs in your browser. Settings, your win/draw/loss record and the game in progress are saved only in this browser's local storage. In-game ads are served by Google AdSense, which may use cookies; see the Quokka Games privacy policy.
