Classic American checkers on a glossy wooden 8×8 board. Play the computer on Easy, Medium, or Hard, or a friend on the same device, with legal-move highlights, multi-jump chains, crowned kings, undo, and a win/loss/draw scoreboard saved on your device.

How to play

Black moves first; players alternate. Men move one square diagonally forward onto a dark square. Capture by jumping diagonally over an adjacent enemy piece into the empty square behind it, and keep jumping in the same turn while more jumps are available. With Forced capture on (the default), you must jump whenever you can. A man reaching the far row is crowned king, which ends the move; kings move and jump both forward and backward. You win when your opponent has no pieces or no legal moves. The game is a draw after 40 moves by each player without a capture, or when the same position occurs three times. Choose vs Computer (Easy, Medium, Hard, playing Black or Red) or 2 Players.

Controls

Tap or click a piece to see its legal moves, then tap a glowing square; or drag the piece onto the square. For multi-jumps with more than one route, tap each landing square in turn. Keyboard: Arrow keys move between squares, Enter or Space picks up and drops a piece, Esc cancels a selection, U undoes (a full turn against the computer). New game restarts with the same settings; Menu changes mode, difficulty, color, and forced capture.

Tips and strategy

  • Keep men on your back row as long as you can; it blocks the opponent from reaching your far row and crowning kings.
  • A man that lands on the far row during a jump is crowned and the move ends there, even if another jump seemed possible.
  • With Forced capture on, you can offer a piece on purpose to pull an opponent's man into a spot where you can double-jump back.
  • Easy mode plays a random move about a third of the time, so it is a good place to practice spotting multi-jump chains.
  • Kings move and jump backward too, so crowning a man early gives you a piece that can hunt from behind the enemy line.

Checkers FAQ

How does the draw rule work in Checkers?

A game is drawn after 40 moves by each player with no capture, or when the same position occurs three times.

Can I undo a move in Checkers?

Yes. Press U or use Undo; against the computer it takes back a full turn, meaning your move and the computer's reply.

How strong are the Checkers difficulty levels?

Easy looks two half-moves ahead and sometimes plays a random move, Medium looks five half-moves ahead, and Hard searches as deep as it can within a short time limit each turn.

Does Checkers save my record?

Yes. Wins, losses and draws against the computer, and each color's wins in 2 Players mode, are saved in local storage along with your settings. A reset option clears the scoreboard.
